3 Qualities Young People Must Have To Succeed In Your Career

When I first started my business in 2011, I didn’t have much experience in the food and beverage industry. After I graduated from high school, i worked in a hotel as a room server for 6 months while waiting for enlistment (National Service).  Fast forward to 8 years later, we have grown from a single school stall to a F&b company with 2 brands and 14 outlets.
Looking back, many of my peers are smarter than me, more resourceful than me, just as driven or even more driven than me, but why am I able to achieve a little result in F&B over the years? What are qualities within me that enable me to get to where I am today?
  1. Care – Genuinely care about the well being of the people around me.When I first started out, we did’t have a lot of money or resources to attract the best people. In the F&b industry, there are a lot of jobs available in the market and it was tough for us to attract people to join us then. We couldn’t do what the big companies are doing (paying good salaries and benefits), thus we have to think of an alternative. What we had an edge then was personalization. We can control the culture we want in the company as we were still small then. Overtime, we build a culture where we genuinely care for our people and through word of mouth, we started attract the right people to join u. It requires more than just money to keep someone to work for you. You need to let the people feel that you GENUINELY care for them.
  2. Love – Love the things you do.The love here stands for Passion. You need to connect with a purpose beyond yourself. When I first started out greendot, I wasn’t happy with what I was doing. I wanted to give up many times but what kept me going was my team. They had faith in me and they followed me. I didn’t want to disappoint them. I want to do well and reward their faith in me. About 4 years into the business, I gradually realized the reason for the unhappiness in me. I didn’t have a purpose in this business. I started because I wanted to do a business and I like the challenge of running a business. I wasn’t clear about what I was trying to achieve with Greendot. A purpose bigger than just money, a purpose bigger than myself. This is probably the path that many young people will go through, you might not have that strong a purpose when you first started. Persevere and get better at what you are doing. When you see start to see the meaning in your work, that’s when you will see a Tipping point in your career.
  3. Hope – Always be positive when you face challenges. Have grit to get through the toughest period.You get stronger during tough times. Learn to hope when all seems lost. This is one of the most important that we must have if we want to achieve any success in anything we do. During my years of running the business, we faced my challenges. I didn’t give up and that’s why I am here today. If you want to achieve any form of success in life, you need to be able to accept failures and move on. I learnt not to take failures mistakes too personally, we learn from them but don’t be too harsh on ourself. Do not let temporary setbacks become permanent excuses. Use mistakes and problems as opportunities to get better – not reasons to quit.
